Dr. Daddy

We saw Daddy at work today. We used to visit him all the time, but apparently it's been a few years. As we approached Clint, I pointed him out to the kids (he was in his surgical garb).  Shari stopped at a distance as if to take a moment to verify that it was really her Daddy. She carefully looked him up and down, and then asked with shock in her voice, "Daddy, are you a DOCTOR?!"

Scotty said emphatically, "Yes, Shari!!" Clint and I laughed, and Shari leapt into his arms.

Ah, now the whole working at the hospital thing makes sense ...

Ice Skating with Babies

Last week when we stopped to feed the ducks at the lake next to the library, we found that the lake had finally frozen. The city cleared off the snow, so we ice "skated" in our shoes after our picnic lunch. Yes, we had an outdoor picnic when it was 20 degrees outside. The babies ate snow for dessert.

Kid Matters

On careers ...

Scotty: Mom, I need help deciding what to be when I grow up.  I don't want to be a construction worker anymore.

Mom (relieved, surprised, acting concerned): Why not?

Scotty: Because what if they don't train me properly and I fall off a tall building?

Mom: Oh ... right.  Well, I thought you and Grant were going to be inventors together.

Scotty: Yeah, but Grant is going to invent a time machine, and he said I have to be the person who tests it out.  What if I get stuck in the time of the dinosaurs?!!

On favorite books ...

Shari Brooke (gathering supplies to take to bed): Mama, where is my Chicka, Chicka 1, 2, 3?

Mom: I'll get it for you.  Is that your favorite book, Shari Berry? (I already know it's her favorite book because we read it daily, nightly, and ever-so-rightly.  I just wanted to hear her say it.)

Shari Brooke: Yes, Mama.

Mom: How come?

Shari Brooke: Because it has a whole bunch of numbers in it!

Shari Brooke is currently in a numbers obsession phase.  She counts everything!  She especially loves to count to 100.  The other day she asked me what comes "next after 100."  I told her 101.  Then she continued, "102, 103, 104 ..."

Grant was complaining about reading his fiction book.  He had already spent half of his reading time with a science experiment book.  Moaning, he begged, "Can't I just read the dictionary for the rest of my time?"

At this point I thought to myself, I have a child who is pleading to read the dictionary.  OK, I guess that'll do. :)
