Forever

Nicole and Grant had a disagreement, due to the actions of Nicole, which is rare and funny.  They had been playing with some clay, and Grant wanted to cut what Nicole had molded.  Nicole told Grant that she was going to clean up a bit and that he could start cutting when she said, "Now."  So she cleaned up every bit of the clay before she said the magic word.  Grant realized immediately that he had nothing to cut, and that Nicole had tricked him.  He was hurt and ran out of the room crying.

I told Nicole that she needed to apologize to him, which she did several times.  Grant responded with, "It's NOT OK!"  So then Nicole informed me that since Grant wouldn't forgive her, he now needed to apologize to her.  I agreed and asked Grant to apologize to Nicole.

Grant said, "Sorry, Nicole."

I prodded, "Now tell your special sister how much you love her."

Grant said to me, "I love her to infinity -- that's how much."

Grant Said ...

In the middle of a silly spell and in between giggles, Grant exclaimed, "My heart can't stop laughing!"

In Memory of Our Founding Fathers

A Nation's Strength
by Ralph Waldo Emerson

What makes a nation's pillars high
And its foundations strong?
What makes it mighty to defy
The foes that round it throng?

It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand
Go down in battle shock;
Its shafts are laid on sinking sand,
Not on abiding rock.

Is it the sword? Ask the red dust
Of empires passed away;
The blood has turned their stones to rust,
Their glory to decay.

And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown
Has seemed to nations sweet;
But God has struck its luster down
In ashes at his feet.

Not gold but only men can make
A people great and strong;
Men who for truth and honor's sake
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly...
They build a nation's pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

Spelling with Grant

Whenever we do spelling, Grant gets sidetracked.  So what should take about five minutes ends up taking twenty or thirty.  Sometimes the delay is due to Grant insisting on writing a letter perfectly, or writing an uppercase and a lowercase of the same letter.  And sometimes the delay is so we can talk about an idea inspired by a spelling word.  Today, Grant wanted to talk all about Papa.

"Mom, did you know that I can give Papa a squeeze so tight that it makes him fall over?" (Giggle, giggle.) "And sometimes Papa gives me money when I see him.  Like sometimes it's quarters or nickels ... and sometimes it's even DOLLARS!" Grant says with big eyes and his arms outstretched.  Then a grand idea strikes, "Mom, wouldn't it be cool if Papa gave me a dollar every time I saw him?!"

Is it any wonder that spelling is my favorite subject?

The Kids Grew Up A Smidge

All day long, the kids kept doing and saying the cutest/funniest things.  At the end of the day, I realized that, first of all, I couldn't remember even a sliver of the things I saw and heard, and secondly, all three of them had done something more grown up that they have never done before.

Nicole: For lunch yesterday, made her own bowl of soup noodles, from start to finish, with no help.  Then last night, Nicole came into my room around midnight and said she needed medicine for her runny nose.  I told her the bottle was downstairs, and to go get it.  A minute later, she emerged from my bathroom with a bottle of "Cough and Cold medicine," asking if that wouldn't work just as well.  She administered it to herself and went back to bed.

Grant: Grant has worked up enough big boy skills to play a game of Monopoly Deal (his new favorite) without whining, screaming, fussing or complaining when he loses.  (As opposed to last week when he played ... his favorite cards -- Boardwalk and Park Place -- were "stolen" from him and he immediately left the table yelling, "I WANT TO WIN!  ME! ME! ME!")

Scotty: Scotty has a new fascination with eggs.  He has suddenly drawn a connection between eggs and birds, and he talks about it all the time.  Yesterday I got the eggs out of the fridge to bake a cake and set them on the counter.  It wasn't a minute later before Scotty was on the counter with an egg in his hand, talking about birds.  I decided he was old enough to learn how to crack the eggs.  Since the recipe called for three eggs, Scotty had three tries.  At the end of our session, Scotty was quite pleased with himself, even though his preferred technique is to hold the egg in his left hand and squeeze it until the shell cracks in a hundred pieces and falls into the bowl.  Once all the eggs were in, I told Scotty it was time to mix them up.  I left him on the counter next to the sink while I stepped across the kitchen to get the hand mixer.  When I returned to him, not more than three seconds later, he had both hands in the bowl, mixing the eggs with his fingers.  I don't know where he ever came up with that idea, but it gives new meaning to the term "mixing by hand."

Despite all the big stuff, however, late in the afternoon yesterday, the kids discovered that the weather was pleasant enough to play outside. (I'd say!  It's been 80 degrees the past few days -- feels like Heaven.)  They ran to their "tree house," which is not a tree house at all, but just leftover branches from the huge tree Clint cut down.  At one point, I caught a very poor picture of all three of them laughing and riding into the tree house on a broom together.  Then I thought, "Look!  They're still little kids!"

Be Mine

Nicole went to great efforts to make Grant and Scotty a valentine.  I was concerned that the boys wouldn't appreciate her time and work.  However, I was happily mistaken.

Nicole handed the card to Grant and said, "Grant, I made you this valentine."

Grant opened it and exclaimed, "Thank you, Nicole!  I love it!"  And then he gave her a hug.  The next moment, Grant jumped up and said, "Now I'm going to make you a valentine!"

I nearly started crying, and I was so glad that I happened to be standing in the room at that time so that I could witness their sweet exchange.

A Random Month or Two of Scotty

Scotty discovered YouTube and watched videos of steam trains for at least an hour during this sitting.  He also likes to watch ocean documentaries and movie trailers.

Sometimes Scotty helps me with the laundry.  Sometimes he just plays.

Scotty LOVES this sweater!

As part of growing up, Scotty took over Grant's bike.  Scotty figured a way to turn this into an exercise bike by propping up one of the training wheels on the base of the lamp.  He thought this was hilarious.

And, more bike adventures.  He really did ride around the house like this.  He's such a funny kid that Clint and I don't know where we got him!

Scotty likes bananas.  This is how he eats a banana with no hands (the banana lays flat on the table, and Scotty lowers his mouth to it).  I think he's trying to avoid getting his hands washed after eating.

And, finally, here is a picture of Scotty on a baby bike.  He is constantly asking me to take his picture.

I don't have a picture to accompany this, but Scotty has recently started saying, "Yoo hoo," when trying to get my attention.  This is after he has called "Mom" five or six times without me responding (according to a friend).

Grant Starts P.E. Class

Every self-improvement was to be implemented "when I turn five," Grant said for months leading up to his birthday.  Attending P.E. with Nicole was near the top of the list.  This picture was taken right before Grant started on his first day.  Nicole vowed to take the very best care of him.

I really thought Grant would wimp out in the warm-up run, but Nicole and her friend Caitlin stuck with Grant and pulled him through.

Grant likes to look at this picture and remember that when they stopped for a break to get a drink, Caitlin's shirt got a drink as well.

It was basketball month, so here's a game that uses a basketball, but is easier for the young ones to play.  I don't know what they're doing exactly, but they did do a lot of dribbling and passing.

At the end of class, Coach gives the kids a little pep talk.  I guess the hour wore Grant out.

 This is what Scotty did while the big kids were in class.
